How much can I expect to spend?

Kitchen remodels come in four different levels, and each level comes with different and wide-ranging price tags. You can spend a few hundred or a few thousand to freshen things up, or you can spend tens of thousands to move walls and replace cabinets and appliances.

Let’s break it down to four different types of remodeling categories, to help you see how much you may end up spending during a remodeling project. Note that the each new upgrade level includes what’s involved in the previous categories.

Makeover: Most people spring for a makeover every few years, just to keep things looking nice and to stay current with color and design trends. Some might refer to this task as a freshening up; it usually doesn’t cost more than a couple hundred dollars. But the refreshed look is often just what a kitchen needs to perk back up! DIYers can handle this in-home.

Upgrade: Call in the Professional for help on this one. If you plan to paint and refurbish cabinets, install a new floor and countertops, replace light fixtures, and buy new appliances, be prepared to pay anywhere from $1,000 to $6,000 for materials alone. A professional contractor can make this a painless process. That’s what they’re there for! They can provide expertise advice for not only how the appliance or fixture works, but how long it will last in your home, to how much you’ll save on your bills.

Minor Remodel: A minor remodel may set you back roughly $5,000-$15,000, which often includes upgrades plus replacing a sink and faucet, repositioning drain and supply lines, adding or replacing cabinets, and making at least one structural change such as closing or opening up a doorway.

Major Remodel: Don’t stress about the amount of money you’ll be spending for this. You’ll be getting the best return on investment possible. You may not even recognize the place when you’re finished. The layout is often changed, the size of the room is larger, you get new electrical circuits and maybe even more windows or a skylight (in addition to cabinets, flooring and so on).
